A seulement 32 ans, Pierre Émerick Aubameyang qui venait de s’engager avec le FC Barcelone jusqu’en juin 2025, a annoncé la fin de sa carrière internationale avec son pays le Gabon au cours d’un communiqué adressé à la fédération gabonaise de football ce mardi 17 mai 2022.

Le désormais ex international a remercié sa famille ainsi que le peuple gabonais et tout ceux qui lui ont soutenu tout au long de sa carrière. Dans son discours l’ancien N°9 des panthères n’a fait mentions d’aucune cause ni motivation qui a soutenu sa décision. Pourtant, tout porterait à croire qu’un conflit houleux subsistant entre les instances du football gabonais dont la Fédération Gabonaise de Football, le Ministère de la Jeunesse et des Sports et le joueur, serait la cause de cette retraite anticipée.
Rappelons que PEA comme aime l’appeler affectueusement ses fans, avait été sanctionné à l’équipe nationale lors de la CAN Total énergie 2022 au Cameroun pour indiscipline. Sanction qui lui a d’ailleurs valu une expulsion de l’équipe laissant ses coéquipiers débuter la compétition sans lui. L’équipe gabonaise, quant à elle avait sorti le grand jeu avec une attaque de qualité qui l’a mené jusqu’en quart de finale sans sa star.
